Are Rice Krispies Treats Halal? Kellogg’s Crispy Treat

Rice Krispies Treats have been a beloved snack for generations, and it’s no wonder why. Their gooey marshmallow texture and crisp rice cereal are the perfect treats for any occasion. But for those who follow a halal diet: Are Rice Krispies Treats halal?

About Rice Krispies Treats & Their Ingredients

Rice Krispies Treats are a popular dessert made from Rice Krispies cereal, marshmallows, and butter. They are easy to make and require only a few ingredients.

Rice Krispies Treats are made with toasted rice cereal, including

Rice, sugar, salt, malt flavor, niacinamide, reduced iron, vitamin B2 (riboflavin), and folic acid. Additionally, they contain corn syrup, fructose, vegetable oil (soybean and palm oil with TBHQ for freshness), sugar, and corn syrup solids. The recipe includes 2% or less of vegetable glycerin, dextrose, gelatin, natural and artificial flavors (milk), salt, DATEM, acetylated monoglycerides, soy lecithin, and BHT for freshness.

Are They Halal?

The answer is NO. Rice Krispies Treats contain gelatin that comes from both beef and pork, which is an animal-based ingredient that is often used to hold marshmallow-based snacks together. This means the snack is unsuitable for Muslims.
