Starbucks Matcha Green Tea Latte: Is It Vegan If Made With Soy Milk?

Both matcha and latte drinks have their own unique distinctions and set of enthusiast drinkers. The matcha drinkers delight in the vibrant drink’s sweet taste and health benefits, while the latte drinkers enjoy the caffeine kick and creamy texture.

Starbucks did the world a favor and married these two together to make a Matcha Green Tea Latte.

Fortunately, Starbucks’ Matcha Green Tea Latte can be made vegan by making the drink with either almost milk, coconut milk, or soy milk. Additionally, if ordering a hot Matcha Green Tea Latte, ask the barista to hold the foam which is made with cow’s milk. The iced version is not made with foam.

What Is Matcha?

Matcha is a finely ground powder that comes from specially grown green tea leaves. This special green tea powder is known for its bright green vibrant color and its sweet taste.

It is also associated with many health benefits including increased concentration, high antioxidant content, and promotion of weight loss.

What Is a Latte?

A latte is typically referred to as a coffee beverage that is made with espresso and a generous serving of steamed milk. As well, lattes can be enjoyed either hot or cold.

How Do I Make the Matcha Green Tea Latte Vegan?

As mentioned above, to make the Starbucks Matcha Green Tea Latte vegan, you must request for the drink to be made with any other milk option aside from cow’s milk.

Currently, Starbucks cow milk alternatives are either almond milkcoconut milk, or soy milk.

In addition to substituting cow milk, those who order their Matcha Green Tea Lattes hot should ask the barista to hold the foam. Although I could not find Starbucks’ foam ingredients list, a bit of research tells me that foam is made with whipped milk.

Animal By-Products are Products Sourced from animals’ meat and meat products, poultry products (meat and eggs), fish, shellfish, dairy products (milk and cheese), and non-food products such as fiber (wool, mohair, cashmere, and leather).

Matcha Green Tea Latte Ingredients (Hot & Cold Versions)

Here is the Matcha Green Tea Latte (hot version) ingredients list sourced directly from the Starbucks website.

Ingredients: Milk, Matcha Tea Blend [Sugar, Ground Japanese Green Tea]

The Iced version has the same ingredients list, just with ice added. Of the two, their hot version comes with foam.

If you navigate to their website, you can see that their hot Matcha Green Tea drink comes standard with foam. On the other hand, if you navigate to the iced version, you won’t see an option for foam.

So, for this particular drink, you just need to be mindful of which version, hot or iced, you’re ordering.
