KOS Organic Plant Protein (Chocolate Flavor) Nutrition Facts, Ingredients, Flavor, and Price

Founded in 2017, KOS Organic Plant Protein is a fully vegan, plant-based supplement company based out of California, USA. Their primary product focus is a protein powder they make with a proprietary formula in their labs.

Think of KOS and its products as small-batch (its largest protein powder tub is 2.6 lb/41.3 oz), boutique, and 100% plant-based.

One of the reasons I chose to buy a tub of KOS’s plant protein is to try something different than the current all-vegan, plant-based industry leaders: Vega and Sunwarrior. I was curious, and maybe you are too since you’re reading this, and after reading their about page, I ordered a tub.

In this article, I’ll be reviewing the chocolate flavor protein powder from KOS. I’ll review its nutrition facts, ingredients, flavor, and price.

Generally speaking, KOS Organic Plant Protein is a product that I enjoy and recommend. It has a rich flavor that isn’t overpowering, mixes well in almond and soy milk, and is fairly priced, considering what you get in each serving.

Review of KOS Organic Plant Protein Chocolate Flavor

So, to be completely transparent with you, I’ve only had this protein powder for about a week since writing this article. However, within that week, I’ve had this protein powder daily in either almond or soy milk.

Personally, I think that’s an adequate amount of time and intake to give an honest review. Should anything about my opinions in this article change, you can be sure I’ll revisit this article for an update! (Though I seriously doubt that’ll happen.)

Anyway, onward to the review of KOS’s organic plant protein powder.

KOS Protein Powder Nutrition Facts

First, we’ll look at the macronutrient breakdown of this plant protein powder’s serving size (2 scoops/39 grams). Then, we’ll review the macronutrient breakdown.

Macronutrient breakdown per 2 scoops or 39 grams

MacronutrientGrams Per Serving
Fat6 grams
Carbohydrates9 grams (2 grams of dietary fiber)
Protein20 grams

Not a bad macro split. The only thing that may be concerning is the fat content.

Compared to their fellow industry leaders, KOS’s grams per serving of fat are a little higher. Vega has 2 grams per serving, and Sunwarrior has 1.5 grams. However, KOS has more grams per serving of protein compared to the other guys. Vega only has 15 grams, and Sunwarrior has 18 grams.

I don’t mind the fat content, especially since it’s all sourced from good fats.

An impressive list!

You’ll notice that I’ve bolded Vitamin B12. Annoyingly, people say vegans are vitamin B12 deficient, but in reality, everyone, okay not everyone, but a lot of people, is vitamin B12 deficient. There are over 3 million cases per year.

So, if you’re worried about vitamin B12 deficiency, make sure to eat foods high in vitamin B12, like nutritional yeast or fortified plant-based cereals. And if you buy KOS protein powder, you can rest assured that a single serving has 40% of the daily value! What a great way to start the day.

All-in-all, macro and micronutrients accounted for. This plant protein breakdown equals 170 calories per serving.

KOS Protein Powder Ingredients

Now, onward to the ingredients list!

Yes, it’s true – most people can pronounce and recognize all of the ingredients on this list. A good and quirky benchmark to determine the quality of your food.

You’ll also notice that KOS has included a digestive enzyme blend filled with ingredients that help our bodies absorb nutrients more readily.

Additionally, they’ve included all the logos/symbols that apply to them. This makes it easier for consumers to know that KOS Organic Plant Protein is dairy-free, non-GMO, vegan, gluten-free, and soy-free – all backed by trusted certifying companies.

A Complete Protein Source?

One thing that wasn’t apparent to me was whether or not this protein powder was a complete protein source. In other words, did it contain all the nine essential amino acids that would make it a complete protein?

Nothing on the label made it apparent to me that it was. And their website states that it’s a Complete Protein to Start Your Day with an infusion of essential nutrients and vitamins, but it wasn’t clear if all nine essential amino acids were present.

I needed to do some research.

For those who don’t know, the nine essential amino acids are histidineisoleucineleucinelysinemethioninephenylalaninethreoninetryptophan, and valine.

After ensuring I had the nine essential amino acids list correct, my research continued with the first ingredient in their organic protein bend: Organic Pea Protein.

So, I took to Google and typed in ‘pea protein amino acid profile.

After reading the first study by the National Library of Medicine, my research was over.

The answer to the question:

“Does this protein contain all nine essential amino acids?”

YES.

Soy, brown ricepea, corn, and potato protein have essential amino acid contents that meet the requirements as recommended by the WHO/FAO/UNU (WHO/FAO/UNU Expert Consultation 2007).

Sorry, I’ll be vegan. Who already knew this? I’m new, haha 😅.

KOS Protein Powder Taste Test

As mentioned above, I’ve only tried KOS chocolate flavor protein powder with almond and soy milk.

Here are the taste test details:

Taste Test With Almond Milk

The almond milk I used was from Silk. Their unsweetened vanilla version only has 30 calories (not that I’m calorie-conscious, though).

The first time I had KOS plant protein powder, I only used one scoop or half a serving because in previous protein powder experiences, going the full two scoops often resulted in clumpiness and poor mixability.

So, on day 1, I only had one scoop of almond milk. To my delight, it tasted really good. I didn’t experience a strong chalkiness texture as I did in Vega protein products. The chocolate flavor was present, enjoyable, and rich, yet not overbearing. It tasted like real chocolate ingredients (which there are), and I appreciated that.

On day 2, I went with a full serving size – 2 scoops into about a cup and a half of almond milk.

Folks, I am happy to report very minimal clumping and chalkiness. Overall, I was happy and continued to start my next few mornings with two scoops and some almond milk.

Taste Test With Soy milk

Why soy milk? I don’t have an allergy to it, and it provides an extra protein boost. I used Greenwise’s Organic Vanilla Soy Milk, which has 7 grams of protein per serving.

Here are the nutrition facts of the vanilla soy milk I used:

This morning was my first taste test with KOS plant protein and soy milk. Based on my 2 scoops of experience with almond milk, I was feeling confident about using 2 scoops of soy milk.

Hold onto your hats, folks, I had the same results as the protein powder in almond milk.

So, now that I’ve tried it and documented the results, you can be confident in using KOS plant protein powder in soy milk for an added kick of protein.
