Is Laffy Taffy Halal? Minis, Stretchy & Tangy, Ropes, Bites – Gelatin Source

Many Muslims mistrust the Laffy Taffy brand since many stereotypes says it may not meet the dietary requirement of a Halal diet.

Halal is anything that meets the rules of Islamic law, so whether a product contains a doubtable or haram ingredient, we will consider it Haram, and we will stay away from them until proven the opposite.

In this blog post, we will see if the varieties of Laffy taffy, including Bites, Ropes, Mini, and Stretchy & Tangy, are Halal or Haram by checking the ingredients list of each variety.

So, let’s dive in

About Laffy Taffy and Its Ingredients

Laffy Taffy is a fruit-flavored brand candy owned by Nestle, available in various flavors that may vary depending on the region: banana, blue raspberry, cherry, grape, green apple, orange, peach, pink lemonade, sour apple, strawberry, and watermelon.

Regarding the ingredients, Laffy Taffy does contain some questionable and Haram ingredients the Gelatin & Mono and Diglycerides.

Gelatin has been proven to be derived from pig fats, which doesn’t meet the requirement of Islamic law. So, any Laffy taffy product containing this ingredient will be Haram.

Most brands can derive Mono and Diglycerides from animal fats or vegetable fat. But the most used and the cheap to produce is the one from pigs.

Are Laffy Taffy Halal? Here’s the answer!

Laffy Taffy has two Haram varieties:

  • Laffy Taffy Bites (All Flavors) – contain Gelatin derived from Pig fats, as mentioned
  • Laffy Taffy Stretchy & Tangy (All Flavors) – contains Confectioner’s Glaze, derived from insects.

The other varieties may be Haram because they contain Mono and Diglycerides (Derived from animal fat or plant). Including:

  • Laffy Taffy Mini
  • Laffy Taffy Ropes

So, as a Muslim, you must avoid Laffy Taffy Bites and Stretchy & Tangy since they are made using haram components Gelatin & Confectioner’s Glaze.

The other flavors depend on how Mono and Diglycerides are made. As I mentioned above, they are almost most from Pigs fats.

Final Thought

Indeed, Some flavors of Laffy taffy are Haram, and others are doubtable. So, if you are a Muslim, try to avoid them all.
